Romania is an EU member state and consistently ranks among Europe's safer countries. In the 2024 Global Peace Index, it ranked in the top 25 worldwide, ahead of France, Belgium, and the United States. Its homicide rate (~1 per 100,000) is below the EU average and a fraction of most major Western European cities. Cluj-Napoca and Baia Mare, where my partner clinics are, are mid-sized cities with low crime and no significant tourist-risk areas.

Which city will I go to?

Which city in Romania is best for dental work?

Accepted Answer

Bucharest is the largest hub with the highest concentration of international-facing clinics and the widest range of specialists. Cluj-Napoca is the main alternative, with excellent clinics and a more manageable city to navigate as a first-time visitor. Baia Mare, where I had my own treatment, is a smaller city with outstanding partner clinics and a quieter, more personal experience. The right city depends on your treatment complexity and personal preference. I recommend clinics in all three.

Do Romanian dentists speak English, German, or French?

At clinics that regularly treat international patients, English is almost always spoken fluently. German is common among Romanian dentists who have completed post-graduate training in Austria or Germany, which many have. French is less universal but available at several clinics, particularly in Bucharest. I always confirm language capabilities before recommending a clinic, and I provide translation support for any language gaps during your treatment.

Many dentists in Romania have completed additional training or residencies in Germany, Austria, or Italy. The technical standards are the same. The costs are lower because salaries and overheads are lower, not because corners are cut.

I vet them personally. I went through my own treatment in Romania and I only recommend clinics I would send my family to. I look at the quality of materials used, the dentist's training and track record, and whether the clinic communicates clearly and honestly with patients.

Will I get a guarantee on my work?

Most clinics offer them, but a guarantee is only as useful as your ability to return and use it. If you're back in Frankfurt and a crown fails, travelling back to claim a warranty is a real commitment. What actually protects you is having a coordinator who stays involved: someone who can get the clinic on the phone, relay your concerns clearly, and advise whether a return trip is needed or whether it can be resolved locally. That's what I'm here for.

Reputable Romanian clinics use the same global implant systems as clinics across Western Europe: Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, Dentium, and Zimmer Biomet are all widely used. I always ask clinics to confirm the specific brand and model before treatment begins, and include this in your written treatment plan. Avoid any clinic that is unwilling to name the implant system they use: transparency on this point is a basic standard.

How much can I realistically save?

A single implant including the crown runs €2,500 to €4,000 in Berlin in 2026. In Romania, the same treatment, same titanium implant, same zirconia crown, costs €600 to €900. A full-arch restoration (All-on-6) quoted at €25,000 to €35,000 in Berlin can be done for €8,000 to €12,000 in Romania. Depending on the scope of work, the price difference is typically between €5,000 and €20,000.

No. Your plan shows the full breakdown: treatment cost by phase, coordination fee, and concierge package if you choose one. Travel and accommodation are your own to arrange, and I am happy to give recommendations.

Can I use my European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for dental treatment in Romania?

Accepted Answer

The EHIC covers emergency dental treatment in Romania at the same rates available to Romanian citizens under the national health system (typically limited to pain relief, extractions, and urgent stabilisation). It does not cover planned dental tourism, implants, crowns, or cosmetic work. For planned treatment, the relevant mechanism is EU Directive 2011/24/EU on cross-border healthcare, which allows you to seek reimbursement from your home country insurer for the amount they would have covered had the treatment been performed at home. I provide a reimbursement guidance pack as part of my coordination service. Note for UK patients: the EHIC has been replaced by the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card), which covers emergency treatment only. Directive 2011/24/EU reimbursement rights do not apply to UK residents following Brexit. If you have private dental insurance, check your policy for any international cover.

Serious work like implants always requires at least two trips: one for placement, one for the final crowns, typically 3 to 6 months apart. My own treatment involved two trips of two weeks each. Some cases are simpler and need less time. I plan the timeline around your treatment, not the other way around.

What about follow-up care when I'm back home?

Accepted Answer

Your regular dentist at home can handle routine check-ups. For anything specific to work done in Romania, I can coordinate a remote consultation with the clinic, or help arrange a return visit if needed. You are not on your own once the trip is over.

How do I send my X-rays or dental records before travelling?

Most recent X-rays are stored digitally by your primary dentist and can be exported as DICOM or JPEG files: simply ask your practice for a copy on USB or via secure email. A panoramic OPG X-ray is the minimum most Romanian clinics need to prepare a treatment plan. If you have a CBCT (3D scan), send that too, as it allows much more precise planning for implant placement and bone grafting. If your X-rays are more than 18 months old, the clinic will likely take new ones on arrival. I help you prepare and send your records to the clinic before your first consultation.

What happens if something goes wrong after I return home?

This is the question I think every patient should ask before committing to dental tourism. The honest answer is: it depends on what goes wrong and how quickly. Minor adjustments (a crown that feels high, persistent sensitivity) can often be resolved remotely with guidance from the Romanian clinic, or by a dentist at home willing to make a straightforward adjustment. More significant issues, such as a failing implant or a poorly fitted restoration, may require a return visit. I stay involved after your treatment ends. I get the clinic on the phone, relay your concerns clearly, and advise whether a return trip is needed or whether the problem can be resolved locally. You do not navigate this alone.

Can I bring someone with me?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and many patients do (a partner, family member, or friend). Having someone with you makes the experience significantly easier, particularly on surgical days when you may not feel like navigating an unfamiliar city alone.
